Human Rights Abuse in Counter-Terrorism Results in Further Spread of Terrorism

UN regional expert symposium “Fair Trial and Due Process in the Counter-Terrorism Context”On 5-6 July 2012, a regional expert symposium, “Fair Trial and Due Process in the Counter-Terrorism Context”, was organised in Brussels by the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) Office in partnership with the UN Working Group on Human Rights.

The symposium brought together senior UN officials, European government representatives, judicial and human rights experts, and representatives of intergovernmental organisations, to discuss the challenges faced by European countries in ensuring fair trials and due process in the course of fighting terrorism.

We took this opportunity to talk to Mr. Ben Emmerson, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. In a short video interview below, he highlights the importance of protecting the human rights of terrorism suspects.
