You are cordially invited to the Brussels launch of the GEO5 report, on 6 June at the European Parliament, which will highlight significant findings, including internationally-agreed goals and options for sustainable development, and key recommendations that address the major issues, particularly from an EU perspective. As well as presenting the state of Europe’s environment and environmental footprint, GEO-5 also highlights successful initiatives and policy approaches for addressing environmental problems in the region that can potentially be scaled-up and replicated elsewhere.
Prominent panelists from the region will offer different perspectives based on their areas of expertise. UNEP’s Executive Director, Achim Steiner, will simultaneously launch the global report from Rio de Janiero.
Speakers in Brussels:
Matthias Groote, MEP & Environment Committee Chairperson
Jan Dusik, UNEP Europe Acting Regional Director
Jacqueline McGlade, Director-General of the European Environment Agency
Jeremy Wates, Secretary-General of European Environment Bureau
Marcel Kok, Dutch Environmental Authority (PBL) (GEO-5 author)
Representative of the European Commission TBC
UNEP’s flagship Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report series keeps the state, trends and outlook of the global environment under review. GEO-5, the fifth in the series, also reviews the progress made in meeting internationally agreed goals, analyses successful policy options that have the potential for speeding up their realization, and highlights actions that both countries and the global community can take for sustainable development.
The launch of GEO-5 comes during the week of ‘World Environment Day’ under the theme Green Economy–Does it Include You? Together they are part of the build up to Rio+20 later in June where world leaders will meet to scale-up and accelerate a transition to a Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.
